In every sector and industry, businesses are growing more and more aware of the impact they have on our planet – and digital marketing, and website hosting, is no different.
As a web design and digital marketing agency, Cognique want to do our bit to protect the planet and reduce our carbon footprint. Using green website hosting provider Krystal is one of the ways we’re going about this.
What is green website hosting?
Green website hosting (also known as green hosting) is, put simply, website hosting that’s kinder to the environment.
These days, the internet is so prevalent in our everyday lives – both business and personal – it’s easy to forget that the internet is one of the biggest, fastest growing carbon polluters around. As more things become digital, more websites are built, more data goes online, and more hardware is needed to keep everything running smoothly.
The goal of green hosting is to reduce the carbon footprint of businesses who choose to host websites with them. Green hosting companies operate as sustainably as they can, and aim to lessen the rising impact the internet is having on our planet.
Who are Krystal?
In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, Cognique use B Corp certified green hosting provider Krystal to host some of our websites. Krystal are one of the first website hosts to be powered by 100% renewable energy. For every customer we host with them, Krystal plant more trees on our behalf – growing our virtual forest.
Non-profit focused and independent
Krystal is a family-owned business with a non-profit focus. They reinvest their profits into protecting the planet, and creating hosting solutions that reduce carbon emissions.
Krystal have also pledged never to sell out, as so many other hosting companies have done. They’ve been in business for over 20 years, and are committed to remaining independent – meaning they can uphold their promises to operate ethically and sustainably.
Technologically superior
When Krystal couldn’t find a cloud platform that was sustainable, quick to recover from hardware failures, and high performing, they decided to take matters into their own hands: their in-house software team built one themselves.
A lot of larger hosting companies have stopped hosting in house. Krystal, on the other hand, host the websites they support themselves – meaning they can control the environmental impact they have.
Energy efficient
Since 2017, Krystal have run on 100% renewable energy, and their UK datacentre has a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) rating of just 1.05 – one of the best in the world. This means their datacentres operate extremely efficiently, and for every watt of energy consumed just 5% is used on building infrastructure, whilst the rest reaches the hosting servers the buildings house.
Cognique are proud supporters of green hosting
We’re proud to support green hosting, doing our bit to reduce our carbon footprint: a sustainable choice that we pass on to our clients once we’ve built their websites. Got a project in mind? Let us know – we can help.
